Post 22 - Using Formal Project Management Techniques

I came across some interesting information on the formal processes of project management and how different project managers adopt different methods and use different approaches. The main focus of each PM of course, being to ensure the completion and delivery of projects on time, within budget and in and of expected quality.

It was interesting to discover from the article findings, that those that had the formal training in processes were a lot more likely to adopt the practices compared to those that hadn't had any training.

This was an interesting pie chart displaying and answer to the question below:

Do you use formal PM techniques such as Agile or Waterfall in projects ?

Pm do you use formal pm techniques

As  you can see there the interesting thing is that 58% of project managers said that the don't use formal project management techniques which is a large amount compared to the 40% that said that they do.

I was quite surprised by these results myself as I had expected the percentage of those that use these techniques to have been rather more than those that don't. I was even more surprised by the 4% that were unsure of whether they do or not use these techniques as that begged me to question their actual understanding of project management in general. I mean if you're a project manager you should at least be familiar with available techniques, even if you don't use them; you would think.

Here is another graph that displayed another breakdown of those PM who employed formal techniques; however, this time the breakdown is based on their qualifications in PMP.

Pm users of formal pm techniques

As you can see that the the PMP certified PM were a lot more likely to adopt the formal techniques compared to those that had no PMP certification. This is something you may expect as these techniques are more likely enforced within these PMI books when individuals take the course.

The article goes on to talk about some of the common challenges PM face
