Post 23 - Instant messaging problems
I saw this interesting article that provides solutions to instant messaging problems that may occur between teams working on a project at the workplace.
Funnily enough, I didn't think problems would arise from instant messaging at work as I expected people would send messages that would be direct and to the point so this article pointed out some interesting situations that do occur.
I believe that there should always be the encouragement for teams in the workplace to communicate and share valuable resources and information between themselves but what about if they are spending time and resources on other than work as this article interestingly highlighted.
Let's actually look at the problems highlighted in the article.
Problem:
Team is spending most of the time chatting away about stuff that has no relevance to work!
The issue is, if you ban all non related talking altogether then they will look for other opportunties to talk; maybe even at the water cooler.
Solution:
Open a new channel of communication for topics outside of work related items. Encourage and direct the team to that new channel if conversation steers off work.
Problem:
Team is using this new communication platform to talk negatively about you and rally workers against you. This surely can't have a positive impact!
Solution:
Encourage open dialogue with your team and try to provide an outlet for them to voice their concerns with you or work.
These ate just two of the issues mentioned in the article that I actually didn't think would happen, I mean the first, I could in some way imagine but the second was totally new to me.
