Post 25 - Team Development Stages in Projects

Interesting to find out that there are actual stages for team development. I always expected that everything happened at once... or at least not in such an organised manner of stages.

I read this article which discussed the stages and thought I'd share with you this new information I discovered. The article focuses on Tuckman's model of team management and discusses his approach

Here is a graphical display of the team development stages:

The article breaks down what each stage involves and I thought I'd provide you with brief description of what each stage is.

This is what I summarised he stages to be below:

Forming

This is the initial stage whereby the team is relatively knew and everyone is getting to know each other, so people tend to be generally polite. In this stage, the main focus is getting to know each other.

Storming

This stage comes after the initial stage of getting to know each other; team members start pushing against the boundaries established in the Forming stage. this is usually due to the differing work styles between members.

Norming

After the tensions and disagreements in the storming stage, team members move into this stage whereby they get to know each other better and therefore learn how to deal with each other.

Performing

After having passed the Norming stage whereby team members are now familiar with each other, we now move onto the final and most important stage of development. In this stage team members are able to perform at their maximum efficiency and productivity as they have gotten to know each other well by now.

This was definitely an interesting model that I wasn't aware of and now that I have seen it can actually relate to it.
